Sailing Home Fun Fold for FF0039

Hello and Happy Friday! It’s time for a new challenge over at Festive Friday! I’m sharing a “fun fold” card that has looks awesome on display AND also folds flat to mail. I’m not too sure who actually created this style of fold but if it’s you, it’s pretty cool! This post is heavy on the photos, but hopefully it will be easy to see how this card comes together.
From today through August 5th over at Festive Friday we are celebrating Lighthouse Day and/or projects featuring Light Rays/Starburst. If you’ve never joined us before, it’s easy. Create a project featuring just the holiday, just the technique…OR mash them both together. It’s fun to see where your creativity takes you!
Of course, as soon as I saw “Lighthouse Day” I immediately grabbed my Sailing Home Bundle. Here’s a funny story, when I first saw this set, I didn’t think I would use it very much but it would be good to have for masculine cards. Turns out, I have used it A LOT over the past couple of months. The stamps and dies are just so perfect together and I just love the nautical theme. I tend to use this set with a lot of blues and reds, so I wanted to create with the Mossy Meadow patterns in the Come Sail Away DSP for this card.

Today’s Colors:

Once assembled, the card looks great displayed! I have seen different names for this type of card out there on the “inter webs” from a pop-up card to a shelf card. I guess you could call it whatever you’d like, right? We also made this card at my monthly team meeting last week. I featured “fancy folds” as our theme this month and everyone LOVED trying out some new techniques. We made three fancy fold cards. You can see one of the other cards we made HERE and I’ll be featuring the third card in the next few days.

Card Measurements:
  • Mossy Meadow Cardstock - 4-1/4” x 10-1/2” (on long side, score art 1/2”, 1-3/4”, 3-3/4” and 5”)
  • Mossy Meadow Cardstock - 3” x 5-3/4” (on long side, score at 1/2”  and 1-3/4”
  • Come Sail Away Designer Series Paper (map print) - 4” x 4”
  • Come Sail Away Designer Series Paper (stripe print) - 1-3/4” x 4”
  • Whisper White Cardstock - 2-3/4” x 3-3/4”
  • Scraps of Mossy Meadow, Crumb Cake, Soft Sea Foam and Soft Suede Cardstock for punched and die-cut pieces

To start assembling the card, adhere the DSP to the Mossy Meadow card base as shown in the photos above. Then, adhere a strip of Tear & Tape to the fold shown in the second photo.
Then, using the photo above as reference, line the cardstock up evenly and push down to adhere.
For the stamped images, I used the background from the Love What You do stamp set. Since the bottom of the image is covered with the die cuts, I just stamped the background in Soft Sea Foam (stamped-off once) close to the top of the Whisper White Cardstock and then stamped the lighthouse image in Soft Suede slightly off-center to the left of the image to allow some room for the die-cut anchor.
To adhere the next piece of Mossy Meadow cardstock to the card base, add a single strip of Tear & Tape as shown in the first photo above. Next, line up the cardstock in the center of the card base (using the photo as reference) and adhere. Then place some adhesive to the back of the Mossy Meadow cardstock (only on the bottom) to adhere to the bottom layer.
I used the Smooth Sailing Dies to create the nautical scene on the front of the card The little “seaweed” pieces are sponged with Crumb Cake ink and then I used some Wink of Stella to give a little bit of sparkle. I also sponged ink around the main image and the sentiment (punched with the Everyday Label Punch) for some extra shading. You could use Soft Suede ink for the sponging if you wanted it to be a little more distressed looking. I wanted to keep the sponging a little more on the subtle side.
Here is a close up of how the card folds down in order to fit into an envelope.
So, what do you say? Head on over to the Festive Friday blog to check out the challenge and join us! We’d love to see your projects celebrating Lighthouse Day or showcasing Light Rays/Starburst patterns…or a combination of both. It’s up to you! You can link up your project through Monday, August 5th at 8:00 pm CST. We can’t wait to see what you create!
