Be Jolly for PP569

Happy Sunday, friends!
Time for a fun new creative challenge over at The Paper Players
This week, I am super-excited to be hosting our monthly Sketch Challenge.
I have said it before and I’ll say it again, I LOVE a good sketch challenge so I couldn’t wait to design the layout for this week. This sketch is one that lends itself nicely to showcasing different patterns of Designer Paper in the background which was what I wanted to focus on for my card. I knew I wanted to make a Christmas card this week so I decided to start by using the Heartwarming Hugs Designer Series Paper. This DSP features a fun mix of plaids, stripes and polka dots in traditional holiday colors and worked perfectly with the Be Jolly stamp set.

*I’ve listed all of the measurements and details for my card below and there is a full supply list at the very end of this post.
Color Combo:
The Be Jolly stamp set has quickly become one of my favorites for Christmas! The images in the set are so whimsical and can be colored easily which is an added bonus. I affectionately refer to this little guy as “jazz-hands Santa”. He’s so cute and that “Be Jolly” sentiment suits him perfectly!

It’s a little tough to see in the photos, but I accented the white areas on Santa’s hat and jacket with some Wink of Stella Glitter Brush. It adds so much sparkly detail which is never a bad thing in my opinion.
Card Measurements & Details:
  • Real Red Card Base: 4-1/4” x 11”, scored at 5-1/2"
  • Pear Pizzazz Cardstock: 4” x 5-1/4"
  • Basic White Cardstock: 3-7/8” x 5-1/8”
  • Heartwarming Hugs Designer Series Paper (3 pieces): 1-13/16” x 5" (red/green plaid), 1-13/16” x 2-7/16" (green plaid), 1-13/16" x 2-7/16"(red stripes)
  • Real Red Cardstock: die cut the largest scalloped circle from the Layering Circles Dies
  • Basic White Cardstock: stamp the Santa image in Momento ink, color using Stampin’ Blends and die cut using the larges circle from the Layering Circles Dies
  • Basic White Cardstock: scrap to stamp sentiment in Momento ink, trim around the edges and cut the sentiment into two pieces
  • White Glitter Organdy Ribbon
  • Rhinestone Basic Jewels: colored using Dark Old Olive Stampin’ Blends
  • Basic White Cardstock (inside card): 4” x 5-1/4"
  • Heartwarming Hugs Designer Series Paper (inside card): 7/8” x 5-1/4"
Finally, here is look inside the card. I simply added in a little strip of DSP, a coordinating sentiment and a cute little bird image to “keep the party going” from the front of the card. That tiny bird just makes me smile with his itty-bitty holiday hat!
On a quick personal note, I wanted to share a photo of our new foster pup with you today. This is Miss Jewel. She’s about 1-1/2 years old, weighs about 19 pounds and looks to be maybe a Whippet/Italian Greyhound mix. She has been with us for about a week now and is settling in nicely. She was rescued from a high-kill shelter in South Texas and is currently available for adoption through Tracy’s Paws Rescue. Isn’t she adorable?

I hope you will join us this week over at The Paper Players and share your project for my  Sketch ChallengeWe’d love to see what you come up with! You can link up your project through Noon PST on Friday December 3rd, 2021

Hippo Happiness for PP568

Happy Sunday, friends!
Time for a fun new creative challenge over at The Paper Players
This week, Laurie is hosting our monthly Clean-and-Simple (CAS) Challenge.
This month our CAS Challenge has a fun little twist with the addition of Gnomes or Fairies to your project. I have to admit, this one had me scratching my head for a minute because I don’t have any gnomes or fairies that are current Stampin’ Up!® sets. I think I have one or two retired sets but they are stored away and trying to locate them was going to be a bit of a challenge in itself. So, I decided to think outside of the box and had an idea to use the Hippo Happiness stamp set and (hopefully) create a little fairy magic on my card.

*I’ve listed all of the measurements and details for my card below and there is a full supply list at the very end of this post.
Color Combo:
I was bound and determined to give this little hippo some fairy wings! The image itself isn’t very large, so it was important not to make the wings larger than the hippo. I decided to use the scalloped border die from the Penned Flowers Dies. Of course, fairy wings are better when they sparkle, so I die cut the border from Polished Pink Shimmer Vellum. If you don’t have the 2021-2023 In Color Shimmer Vellum, add it to your next order. It is SO pretty in-person.

After I die cut the vellum, I snipped two sets of two scallops to create the fairy wings. I added them behind the die-cut hippo with a small piece of a Stampin’ Dimensional between them to separate them a little and make them pop. Hopefully you can see it a little better in the photo below. What do you think? Did I successfully turn this cutie patootie hippo into a fairy princess? I showed my husband the card and asked “do these look like fairy wings?”…and his answer was “why does the hippo have fairy wings?”. I don’t think he quite understood the assignment. :)

*One tip I found with the Hippo Happiness stamp set is to stamp the darker detailed image first in Polished Pink ink, then go back and the stamp solid hippo image (stamped-off once) in Polished Pink ink. I found it was a little easier to line the two images up this way because you could see the darker ink more clearly when trying to line the images up.
Card Measurements & Details:
  • Polished Pink Card Base: 4-1/2” x 11”, scored at 5-1/2"
  • Basic White Cardstock: 4-1/8” x 5-3/8”, add a soft layer Coastal Cabana ink to the center of the cardstock using a Blending Brush
  • Pattern Party Designer Series Paper (host exclusive): die cut the second largest label from the Hippo & Friends Dies
  • Basic White Cardstock: scraps to stamp the hippo, balloons and bow, then die cut using the Hippo & Friends Dies
  • Basic White Cardstock: scrap to die cut a stitched cloud from the Give it A Whirl Dies, add some Wink of Stella Glitter brush for added sparkle
  • Daffodil Delight Cardstock: 3” x (just under) 1/2”, stamp sentiment from the Hippo Happiness stamp set in Momento ink and banner punch ends using the Tailored Tag Punch
  • In Color Jewels: add one to the hippo’s bow and two to the card front as shown
  • Silver Simply Elegant Trim: to create the balloon strings
  • Basic White Cardstock (inside card): 4-1/8” x 5-3/8"
  • Pattern Party Designer Series Paper (inside card): 4-1/8” x 5/8”
Here’s a peek inside the card! You can never go wrong with another pink hippo, so I kept the party going from the front of the card. Although, this Polished Pink cutie is the cousin to the hippo on the front and hasn’t earned her fairy wings yet. Haha! I just added a little strip of DSP for the hippo to “sit” on and stamped some sparkles in the top corner. I meant to add a few more…but I guess I got distracted. Oops!
When I originally started making this card, I had planned on adding TWO hippos but just couldn't make the scene come together without it being overly cluttered. Let’s face it, these little fairy divas can’t be expected to share the spotlight. I already had my little Highland Heather hippo with her Bermuda Bay bow stamped and cut out, so I just recreated the card with that color combo. I love the “Hippo Birthday” sentiment and always need more birthday cards, so it worked out perfectly.
Here are both cards side-by-side. Do you have a favorite color combo between the two? I’m partial to that Polished Pink/Daffodil Delight card myself but have to admit, that little purple hippo fairy is pretty darn cute, too.
