Under My Umbrella Fun Fold for PP498

Happy Sunday! Time for a new creative challenge over at The Paper Players
This week, Anne is hosting our monthly Theme Challenge.
Check it out and play along with us!
Oh, how I love a good Fun/Fancy Fold Card! It’s always nice to add a little extra interest to a card with a unique opening or a fun surprise inside. There are so many awesome idea out there for fun/fancy folds. I sure hope you will try one out and play along with us this week!
For my card, I decided to use the Under My Umbrella stamp set paired with (my new favorite) Playing with Patterns Designer Series Paper. I can’t stop using this DSP, the mix of colors and patterns are so beautiful. This DSP even makes me like Crushed Curry! If you know me, that’s a BIG deal! Haha!

 Color Combo:

This post is a little heavy on the photos, but I hope it helps to see how to put the card together. I’ve listed all of the measurements and details below and there is also a full supply list at the very end of this post.
I saw this fancy fold on Pinterest not too long ago and have really been wanting to make it. I have no idea what this fold is called though, so if you know, please leave me a comment. It starts out as a Gatefold Card, and then the added layers make for a fun closure. I originally got inspiration from BJ Peters’ blog although I did change up her measurements on the front layers because I didn’t want as much space between the layers.
As you can see from the photo above, where you adhere the front layers is key to the card opening and closing properly. For the top and bottom layers you only add adhesive to the back of the right side. On the middle layer, you only add adhesive to the back of the left side of the layer.

For this card, I would definitely use a strong adhesive on these layers like liquid glue or Tear & Tape because you do have to wiggle this card a bit to get it open and closed. You have to tuck the top and bottom layer slightly behind the scalloped circle when closing the card. It’s a pretty tight squeeze, but as long as you are gentle, it will slide in place. You could also make the layers and/or focal image a little smaller if you’d like…it’s up to you.
 Card Measurements and Details:
  • Calypso Coral Card Base - 5-1/2” x 8-1/2”, score on long side at 2-1/8” and 6-3/8”
  • Crushed Curry Cardstock - 1-3/4” x 4-1/8”, 3 pieces
  • Playing With Pattens Designer Series Paper (brushstroke pattern) - 1-5/8” x 4”, 2 pieces
  • Playing with Patterns Designer Series Paper (polka dot pattern) - 1-5/8” x 4”, 1 piece
  • Calypso Coral Cardstock - scrap to die cut a 3-1/8” scalloped circle from Layering Circles Dies, emboss with Subtle 3D Embossing Folder
  • Whisper White Cardstock - scrap to die cut 2-7/8” stitched circle (largest circle) from the Stitched Shapes Dies
  • Whisper White Cardstock - scrap to stamp umbrella and umbrella handle, punch out with Umbrella Builder Punch, color umbrella with Calypso Coral Stampin Blends
  • Whisper White Cardstock - scrap to stamp rain boots and floral images, color with Stampin’ Blends and fussycut
  • Playing with Patterns Designer Series Paper (polka dot pattern) - scrap to stamp umbrella image and fussy-cut the middle section of umbrella to paper piece over other punched umbrella
  • Color pearls with Stampin Blends, add to flower centers and top of umbrella
  • Artistry Blooms Sequins and Linen Thread
  • Whisper White Cardstock (inside card) - 4” x 5-1/4”
  • Playing with Patterns Designer Series Paper (polka dot pattern, inside card) - 3/4” x 5-1/4"
Here is a close-up of the stamped detail. I stamped one umbrella on Whisper White Cardstock and colored it with Calypso Coral Stampin Blends. Then I stamped another umbrella on the DSP. I cut out the center of the second umbrella and paper pieced the polka dot pattern for a little added detail. I also added Clear Wink of Stella to the umbrella, the flowers and the boots for some added sparkly detail. I also added a linen thread bow because I felt like it needed a little more texture.
Finally, a peek inside the card. (This is also another good example of how those front layers are adhered to the card.) I added a little strip of DSP, a pair of cute stamped rain boots  and left lots of space to write a handwritten note.
