Simply Succulents for PP598

Happy Sunday, friends!
Time for a fun new creative challenge over at The Paper Players
This week, Laurie is hosting our Theme Challenge.
As soon as I saw the challenge for this week, I couldn’t wait to play along. Up until we moved into our current home, I never really considered myself a “green thumb”. The yard in our home came with a LOT of landscaping, so it wasn’t really an option not to learn how to care for all of the beautiful plants. Now, my husband always laughs at me as I want to keep adding more and more to the yard every year. He insists that we are running out of room, but I say, there is ALWAYS room for another plant. I never would have guessed that I would go from not being able to keep a plant alive to this. Haha! I hope you will join us with your creative project and play along this week!

*I’ve listed all of the measurements and details for my card below and there is a full supply list at the very end of this post.
My card uses one of my favorites in the Stampin’ Up!® Annual Catalog, the Simply Succulents stamp set and coordinating Potted Succulents Dies. This succulent image is so much fun to color with Stampin’ Blends! Succulents come in so many different shapes and colors, so I really had fun shading this image. The image does take a little time to color but I think the end result is worth every minute.

I colored the image first without any “plan” on how I was going to use it on a card. After I had it finished I remembered a pattern in the Hues of Happiness Designer Series Paper and hoped it would work with my image. I think the purples, blues and greens really made a beautiful backdrop for the shaded succulent. I also added a little “frame” on the DSP using the Stitched with Whimsy Dies. It almost gives the illusion of another layer without the bulk. I accented the card with some vellum die cut succulents, Linen Thread and a trio of Iridescent Rhinestones. I had to get a little pop of sparkle on the card somewhere, you know? ;)

Here is a peek inside the card! I used another piece of that beautiful Designer Series Paper and added two little die cut succulents from the Potted Succulents Dies. One is Granny aPple Green and the other is Highland Heather. I left the sentiment blank for a handwritten note for the recipient.
Lastly, here is a photo that helped inspire some of the coloring on my card. This is one of the many potted succulents in our yard. The original plants are over 32 years old and we have enjoyed sharing the cuttings with friends so they can also have a little piece of our yard that we love so much.

  4. Anne Marie I so thought your choice of DSP influenced your colouring - until I read your post! That must be true serendipity - they were made for each other! Love the insight into your garden too - such a great source of inspiration.

  6. You did a great job with these succulents...on the card and in real life! Dana & Cassidy are really into cacti these days, but with that non-green thumb of mine, I'll just stick my standards, LOL!

  8. I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE this card! The colors just pop out of the computer. I am a huge succulent fan. I don't have much luck growing them, but I know you do in San Antonio! I used to love all the cactus in Phoenix when I lived there, Everything about this card makes me smile. Frame Worthy, indeed!

  11. My first thought when I saw this gorgeous card was that it was so clever to have coloured the background as well as the main image so that they coordinate so perfectly. And then I read that you had coloured the succulents first and then found a DSP to work with it! Such a beauty Anne Marie! Vicky x
